    Heritage Stone Restoration in Jersey

Like-for-like repair of historic Jersey granite buildings, using traditional lime mortar and matched stone so the work looks as though it has always been there.

R-V Stonemasons restores historic stonework across Jersey: granite farmhouses, cottages, outbuildings, boundary walls and the features inside them. Every repair is done like for like, with traditional lime mortar and stone matched to the original, so the building keeps its character and can carry on breathing as it was designed to.

The business was founded in 2020 by master stonemason Russell Videgrain, who has over 16 years in the trade and has worked on some of the island's most prestigious developments. He leads every job himself.

Why old Jersey buildings need lime, not cement

Most of Jersey's traditional buildings have solid granite walls bedded in lime or earth mortars. Lime mortar is softer and more breathable than the stone, so moisture can escape through the joints and the mortar, not the granite, takes the wear. Cement is harder and far less permeable. It traps damp inside the wall, can push moisture out through the stone instead, and makes later repairs harder.

That is why heritage work at R-V Stonemasons uses traditional lime mortars, often mixed by Russell himself, and why the first job on many old properties is carefully removing earlier cement repairs.

    Matching the stone

A restoration only works if the new stone sits quietly beside the old. Years of sourcing Jersey granite mean Russell can usually find stone of the right colour, grain and size, including reclaimed pieces, so repairs blend in rather than stand out.

    Listed and period properties

If your home is a listed building, some works may need planning consent from the Government of Jersey before they start. It is worth checking early. Russell can talk through the work on a free site visit so you know exactly what is proposed and which traditional materials will be used.

    What Clients Say

    5 star rating
“After an absolute nightmare experience with a previous company, Kalmac, Russ at RV Stonemasons has completely restored my faith in tradesmen. I own a (nearly) 500-year-old granite fireplace and chimney which Kalmac effectively ruined. They coated the entire thing in StormDry, leaving the granite with an awful permanent wet-look finish, used cement instead of proper lime mortar on a period property, and even painted over the fireplace mortar with white cement to disguise damp issues they hadn't actually resolved. In the end, they were unable to fix the damage they caused. Thankfully, I found Russel. From day one, he approached the job properly, respectfully, and with genuine care for the building. He organised everything seamlessly — scaffolding, specialist sandblasting, even beautiful new lighting — and then worked tirelessly to painstakingly rake out, rebuild, repoint, and repair the years of damage caused by the previous company. The difference is unbelievable. The fireplace and chimney now look authentic again and, more importantly, have been restored correctly using appropriate materials and techniques. Russ is personable, incredibly hardworking, meticulous, exceptionally tidy, and very reasonably priced considering the quality of the workmanship. Nothing was too much trouble, and it's obvious he genuinely takes pride in what he does. I honestly wouldn't use anyone else going forward and cannot recommend RV Stonemasons highly enough. If you care about quality craftsmanship and want someone who actually understands historic stonework and period properties, Russ is your man.”

“Recently, RV stonemasons completed the restoration of an old granite fireplace for us. The fireplace was covered up by bricks for many years and very dirty. Russell managed the entire project, from sourcing matching granite to rebuild the fireplace, to arranging the delivery and installation of a new oak lintel, as well as organising a sandblaster to clean the stonework. The work area was kept very clean and tidy and Russell updated us regularly about the progress of the work. The end result looks amazing and we are very happy about how the fireplace is brought back to life. We have used RV Stonemasons now for several granite restoration projects and will definitely use them again. Highly recommend!”

    FAQ

    Heritage Restoration: Common Questions

Do you restore listed buildings in Jersey?

Yes. R-V Stonemasons works on period and heritage properties across Jersey using like-for-like methods and traditional lime mortar. If a building is listed, some works may need consent from the Government of Jersey first, so it is worth checking before work starts.

Can you remove old cement pointing from a granite house?

Yes. Cement is raked out carefully by hand and the joints are repointed in lime mortar, which lets the wall breathe and helps cure damp problems caused by the cement.

Can you match my existing granite?

Usually, yes. Russell has years of experience sourcing new and reclaimed Jersey granite to match existing stonework so repairs blend in.

Do you give free quotes for restoration work?

Yes. Every project starts with a free, no-obligation site visit and a clear quote and timeline before any work begins.
