Lime Pointing & Repointing in Jersey
Internal and external lime pointing that protects granite, lets old walls breathe and stops water getting in.
Lime pointing is the traditional way to protect granite walls. R-V Stonemasons repoints cottages, farmhouses, gables, chimneys and internal feature walls across Jersey using breathable lime mortar, often mixed by Russell himself.
Good pointing does more than look neat. One client's leaking gable and chimney stopped leaking once they were repointed in lime.
Why lime mortar for granite?
Lime mortar is softer and more breathable than granite. It lets moisture escape from the wall and moves slightly with the building, and it is designed to weather before the stone does. Cement pointing does the opposite: it is hard and dense, traps water behind it and can lead to damp and damaged stone.
How the work is done
Old or failed mortar is raked out by hand to a sound depth, the joints are cleaned and dampened, and fresh lime mortar is packed in and finished to suit the building. Lime cures slowly, so new work is protected from hard frost, strong sun and driving rain while it sets.
When clients are off island, Russell sends regular updates and photos so they always know how the job is going.

What Clients Say
“R-V Stonemasons did a great job lime pointing three internal granite walls for us over the summer. Russell listened to what we wanted and went the extra mile by sourcing materials we suggested from his yard. The end result looks fantastic. Russell is very reliable and provided great updates about the progress of the work. This was the second project R-V Stonemasons has done for us and we will definitely ask him back for the next one. Thanks for the hard work, highly recommended.”
“We couldn't be happier with the work Russ from R-V stonemasons has done for us. He lime pointed our chimneys and cottage to an excellent standard, and we're absolutely delighted with the finished result. Russ was incredibly reliable, tidy and professional throughout. He kept us informed every day about how things were progressing when we were off island, which was really reassuring, and we always felt we could trust him completely. He's also a very honest and genuine person, which made the whole experience so easy. It's not often you find someone who combines excellent workmanship with honesty, reliability and a great personality. Russ is a real perfectionist and takes huge pride in his work, also making his own lime mortar. We would highly recommend Russ to anyone looking for a skilled, trustworthy and conscientious stonemason. Thanks again, Russ — fantastic job!”
FAQ
Lime Pointing: Common Questions
What is lime pointing?
Lime pointing is filling the joints between stones with lime mortar instead of cement. It is the traditional method for Jersey granite because lime is breathable and flexible, so it protects the stone and lets the wall dry out.
Is lime or cement better for pointing a granite wall?
Lime is better for traditional granite walls. Cement is harder and less breathable, so it traps moisture in the wall and can damage the stone over time.
Can repointing stop a leaking gable or chimney?
Often, yes. Failed pointing is a common way for water to get in. R-V Stonemasons has repointed a leaking gable and chimney in lime, and the leaks stopped.
Do you do internal lime pointing?
Yes. Exposed internal granite walls can be raked out and lime pointed to a clean, traditional finish.
How long does lime pointing take?
It depends on the size of the job. A small area may take a few days and a whole house longer. You get a clear timeline with your free quote.
